Spring is finally here, and while most homeowners are focused on cleaning gutters and freshening up flowerbeds, one critical item often gets overlooked: post-winter garage door maintenance. Months of freezing temperatures, road salt, ice, and moisture can quietly wear down your garage door system.
A few simple checks now can prevent a costly breakdown later. Use this spring garage door maintenance checklist to make sure your door is ready for the warmer months ahead.
1. Clean: Remove Salt, Grime, and Winter Buildup
One of the most important steps in how to clean a garage door after winter is tackling salt and road grime. Salt residue is corrosive and can eat away at metal panels, hardware, and the bottom seal over time.
Wipe down the exterior door panels with a mild soap and warm water solution. Clean the tracks using a damp cloth to remove dirt, debris, and salt deposits. Rinse the bottom seal and check it for cracking or separation from the door.
2. Look: Inspect Cables, Rollers, and Springs
A visual inspection takes only a few minutes but can catch problems before they escalate. With the door closed, take a close look at all the major components.
- Cables: Look for fraying, kinking, or rust. Never attempt to repair cables yourself, as they are under extreme tension.
- Rollers: Check for chipping, cracking, or flat spots that could cause rough operation.
- Springs: Look for visible rust, gaps in the coils, or signs of wear. A broken spring is a common cause of garage door failure and should be handled by a professional.
If anything looks off during your visual inspection, it is best to call a professional before the problem worsens. Damaged cables and springs in particular can be dangerous to handle without the right tools and training.
3. Listen: Pay Attention to New Sounds
Your garage door will often tell you when something is wrong before it fully breaks down. After winter, open and close the door a few times and listen carefully. Grinding can indicate worn rollers or debris caught in the tracks. Squeaking often points to parts that need lubrication. Banging or popping sounds may signal a spring or cable that is under uneven tension.
If any new sounds appeared over the winter, do not ignore them. Catching a minor issue early is far less expensive than an emergency repair.
4. Test: Check Balance and Safety Features
Two quick tests can reveal whether your door is safe to operate regularly. First, is the balance test. Disconnect the opener and manually lift the door to waist height. Release it. A properly balanced door should stay in place. If it falls or rises, the spring tension needs adjustment.
Next is what’s known as the safety reversal test. Place a 2×4 flat on the ground in the door path and close the door. It should automatically reverse when it contacts the board. If it does not, the opener needs to be adjusted immediately.
5. Lubricate: Know What to Treat and What to Skip
Proper lubrication is a key part of any post-winter garage door maintenance routine. Use a dedicated garage door lubricant or white lithium grease for best results.
- Do lubricate: Hinges, rollers (metal only), torsion spring coils, and the opener chain or screw drive.
- Do not lubricate: Tracks. Applying grease to the tracks can attract dirt and cause the door to slip or bind. Simply keep them clean.
A quick lubrication pass takes less than ten minutes and can significantly extend the life of your garage door’s moving parts, making it one of the easiest wins in your spring maintenance routine.
